Centerpiece News

~When one of the biggest names in music (Radiohead) combined with one of the most acclaimed names in American filmmaking (Paul Thomas Anderson) for a music video from their last album, A Moon Shaped Pool, it was pure short film perfection. PTA has continued to collaborate with the band members including the music short documentary Junun featuring guitarist (and frequent composer for PTA’s films) Johnny Greenwood. Now it seems that PTA is collaborating with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke on his new solo album with the experimental short film, “Anima”. Inspired by the one-reeler short films that used to play prominently in the silent era, this short promises to be a visual and aural feast. For those are lucky enough to live near one of the select IMAX cinemas, you can even see this one on the big screen.~

~In major behind-the-scenes film school news, Susan Ruskin has accepted the dean position at the AFI Conservatory program. Ruskin ran the University of North Carolina Schools of the Arts for five years previous to this announcement. She was a major reason for the completion of their 30,000 square-foot New Media Building. Before her time in film education, Ruskin was an experienced Hollywood producer and former creative executive at Lucasfilm Ltd.~

The shorts were originally posted to the Olympic Channel, but the footage will finally be distributed to a major audience~

~In a new edition of Reverse Film School, Vanity Fair magazine explores in detail just how useful a gaffer is to the production of a film. Like in their video on Script Supervisors, a scene is broken down again and again, showing all the different ways that a position most audience members know nothing about actually makes the film look as professional and Hollywood quality as it does.~

~Calling all short filmmakers! Looking for a summer grant that can help fund your next project?? Filmmaker Magazine reminds you to consider applying for the Davey Foundation Short Film Grants. But you’ve only got until July 5th to apply!~

Festival Circuit

~Virtual Reality continues to pair well with current events and serious social issues, as can be seen in an extensive review of this year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest by the British Film Institute. Some of the highlights included a highly-controversial live performance AR Experiment (that drew walk-outs) and a 30-minute poignant and immersive look at the issue of social cleansing in London.~

~Palm Springs ShortsFest is up and running this weekend! For its 25th year, things kicked off with a bang, with the premiere screening series proving to be an emotional and politically-charged lineup. Hundreds of more films will be screened this weekend, with winners announced in the next few days. ~

~In an historic moment of short film exhibition, Rooftop Films and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey will co-curate a film screening series at the World Trade Center site. Rooftop Films has been known for finding unique venues to host highly-curated films from New York vantage points. On one of the promised screening nights, Rooftop will partner with Sundance to bring some of the best shorts from this year’s festival to a New York audience.~
